A few weeks ago I furtively checked online and found what I was looking for. Cleared my history to avoid detection by my husband and kids.
I drove to my destination and parked in the back to avoid running into anyone I knew.
Got out of my car furtively glancing around wishing I didn’t leave my sunglasses in my other bag.
So far so good. Opened the door and walked smack into one of my knitting buddies.
BUSTED.
“What are you here to see?” I asked her, a little ashamed.
“Anything.” she said. “I only allow myself to go on Fridays, and even then – every thing in my house has to be done before I’ll allow myself to indulge…It’s my guilty pleasure” her voice trailed off.
“You don’t have to explain it to me”, I confided, “I love playing hooky and checking into a theatre ALL BY MYSELF”.
“Best part is – I don’t have to share my popcorn” she smiled. “I don’t have to take any one to the bathroom, referee any fights or hold anyone on my lap during the scary parts”.
“That’s not the best part. The best part is I’m here for free.” I whispered conspiratorially.
“What are you talking about?”
“The Mummy Card. Sign up and get free passes to Guzzo Theatres. Then put them in your pocket, and don’t show them to any one. When you want to relax solo you can write your own ticket, if you know what I mean.”
Now you all know what I mean. Take your Guzzo passes and treat yourself. You deserve it.
Four Tips for Enjoying a Movie by Yourself:
1. Go Lite: Pick a romantic comedy or something that will put you immediately at ease. This is not the moment to watch an intense psychological thriller.
2. Weekdays Rule: You will be more comfortable hanging out with yourself if you aren’t surrounded by couples on date night.
3. Plan Ahead: Block the time off in your schedule. This is an appointment with yourself. Think of it as stress prevention.
4. Turn off your phone: For maximum relaxation, turn your phone completely off. Buzzing and texting will ruin your – er, buzz.
