Last year, over 550 people attended MADA's gala, raising more than $130,000 for the Cafeteria/Soup Kitchen.
This year, proceeds from M4M will benefit Shabbat to Share - an incredible, weekly program where volunteers deliver a full meal to more than 350 individuals who are isolated, shut-in and living below the poverty line.
“The theme of the event is Light up a Life,” explained Aviva Orenstein Kalin, chair of the event “because this program has the power to light up the lives of everyone involved – from the volunteers to the recipients. For most, Shabbat to Share not only provides their one nutritious meal each week, but it also lets them know that there is a community who cares about them. This has become so much more than a project – no one should have to struggle for food.”
Guests will be treated to a unique auction featuring candles, candlesticks, lampshades and chandeliers created by artists, designers and local students. The highlight of the evening will be a special ‘Live Painting’ art presentation by renowned artist Jessica Gorlicky, whose most recent exploits include touring Canada with the Winter Olympic Torch in 2010 and a recent contract with Cirque Du Soleil. Tickets are $90 before May 25th ($100 after) and can be purchased online at www.gala.madacenter.com or by calling Miriam Sebbag at 514 342-4969 ext. 227.
Every day, 365 days a year, the MADA Community Center reaches out to those less fortunate in our community. As one of Montreal’s largest soup kitchen and food bank, MADA now serves 500 hot meals daily including Shabbat and Holidays. Their newly expanded food bank provides over 3,600 people with food baskets every month. In 2011 MADA distributed 8 780 000 pounds of food, 219 000 meals and 45 300 food baskets.
MADA’s mission is to help those in need with the basic necessities of life in a dignified manner and to aid them in becoming self-sufficient. This is accomplished with a myriad of services including three satellite cafeterias located in Montreal West, Cote St. Luc and Snowdon; a take-out and home delivery service for patrons with limited mobility; community holiday celebrations to combat loneliness and isolation; a new clothing ‘store’ so patrons can have a dignified ‘shopping’ experience; and a used clothing depot and furniture depot.
